He was at the top of his game, commanding respect and wielding power and in 1970, Steve McQueen flew to France to begin work on the $6 million budget film that had been his passion for the best part of a decade...Les Mans.
An elite crew were headed by 45 of the world’s most famous racing drivers. Authenticity was at the centre of McQueen’s vision. He wanted to capture the real danger and the true essence of racing requiring drivers to reach actual racing speeds day in, day out.
But as production rolled at the start of June 1970, what McQueen didn’t yet have was a script...
He would lose his marriage, close friendships and control of his film, and risk lives in the process.
